Back to
school!! Hurray!!
I am Jeanette Huck and I am the
Learning Consultant at St. Paul this school year. It is time for
Back to School! It is a great time to review skills your child
has learned the previous year. It is important for your child to
have a routine for homework and studying time. Try to find a set
time that your child knows will be homework time. Find a place
that is quiet that your child can focus on his/her work. Allow
your child breaks but monitor how long the breaks will be and set a
timer. Start off the new year with a consistent focus on school
work and a positive attitude.
There is information about learning concerns and a listing of websites
that provide practice for your child in various skills on
websites. Please check out the information on these sites by

The
activities are listing for various age groups and different activities.
Some suggestions for helping a
child to focus or attend better at home as well as at school:
1. Maintain eye contact when giving directions.
2. Use gestures to emphasize a point that you are making.
3. Provide a work area
away from distractions like T.V.
4. Have a special place for materials and books that is
consistent every time.
5. Start to give directions one at a time until he can easily
complete the task, then give wo directions at a time, then three, etc.
6. Provide a model of what he is to do, if you are giving him a
new task to do.
7. When you ask him a question, always begin with his name first
to get his attention.
8. When transitioning to
a new activity, give a warning a few minutes prior to changing
activities.
9. Using activities that
engage a child using many modalities such as visual, hearing, touching
are ways to help keep a child's attention.
10. When a student is reading, use the unison reading technique
to help the child to stay focused.
11. Utilize books on
tape or record reading assignments so that the student can read and
listen at the same time.
12. Do activities
together for increasingly longer periods of time as he is able to
handle it. Activities can include building with legos or some
building blocks, making a craft or cooking something simple. Work
together and point out details in directions as you complete the
activity.
